Visa Background Check Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions from Portland-area visa and immigration applicants.
How do I get an FBI background check for a visa in Portland?
Visit any PDX Fingerprinting location in Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, or Beaverton or request mobile service. We capture your fingerprints and submit to the FBI via our approved channeler. Expedited results in 2–3 business days. Call (503) 212-0678 or book online.
Does my FBI background check need an apostille for a visa?
Yes, if your destination country is a Hague Apostille Convention member (which includes most countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Australia). PDX Fingerprinting handles the complete fingerprinting + FBI submission + apostille process. For non-Hague countries like the UAE and China, embassy legalization is required instead PDX handles that too.
How recent must the FBI background check be for a visa?
Most embassies require the FBI Identity History Summary to have been issued within the last 3–12 months. South Korea (E-2 visa) requires it within 6 months. We recommend starting the process at least 6–8 weeks before your visa appointment to allow time for FBI processing and apostille certification.
What is the difference between the FBI Identity History Summary and a standard background check?
The FBI Identity History Summary (also called a ‘rap sheet’) is the official FBI record of your complete U.S. criminal history. It is the document required by foreign governments and embassies for visa, residency, and citizenship applications. It is different from employer background checks or state-level background checks.
Do I need a translation of my FBI background check?
Some destination countries particularly non-English-speaking countries require a certified translation of your FBI apostille into their official language. PDX Fingerprinting provides ATA-certified translation through our certified translation service. Translation runs parallel to apostille processing, adding no extra time.
Can PDX Fingerprinting also apostille my Oregon state documents?
Yes. Many clients going abroad need BOTH an FBI apostille (for their federal background check) AND an Oregon apostille (for their birth certificate, marriage certificate, or other state documents). PDX handles both simultaneously. See our Oregon State Apostille Service.
Not sure what my country requires — can you help?
Yes. Call PDX Fingerprinting at (503) 212-0678. We serve clients going to 30+ countries and are familiar with current embassy requirements for all major visa and residency destinations. We will tell you exactly what documents you need and in what format.
How much does the complete FBI background check + apostille service cost?
Our fee covers fingerprinting, FBI submission coordination, and apostille submission management. The FBI and U.S. Department of State charge their own processing fees. Bundle pricing is available for the complete fingerprinting + FBI + apostille + translation package. Call (503) 212-0678 or email in**@***************ng.com for current pricing.
