Does India Accept an Apostille?

Yes. The Apostille Convention entered into force for India on July 14, 2005. U.S. public documents with an apostille are accepted for use in India without embassy legalization, although the receiving office may still set its own format, validity, and translation rules.

Documents People Apostille for India

  • Business, property, and power of attorney documents
  • Marriage and family records
  • Education and employment credentials
  • Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and long-term visa paperwork

Most requests follow one of two routes. Federal documents, such as an FBI Identity History Summary, are handled by the U.S. Department of State through our FBI apostille service. State-issued documents, such as birth, marriage, and death certificates, are handled by the Secretary of State where they were issued. We process Oregon documents and other states for $195 (New York is $350 for the first document and $65 for each additional), listed in our apostille by document guide.

Translation for India Documents

Documents in English are commonly accepted in India, but some offices ask for a Hindi or regional-language translation. Check with the requesting office.

PDX Fingerprinting arranges certified Hindi or a regional language translation to go with your apostilled documents. See our certified document translation service and apostille translation services. Certified translation is $65 per page. Call (503) 212-0678 to get started.

How to Get Your Documents Ready for India

  1. Confirm what the receiving office needs. Ask the employer, consulate, or agency in India which records they want, how recent they must be, and whether translation is required.
  2. Get the right original. For vital records, order a certified copy from the issuing state or county. For a background check, request your FBI Identity History Summary.
  3. We apostille it. Federal documents go to the U.S. Department of State. State-issued documents go to the Secretary of State where they were issued.
  4. We arrange translation. After the apostille, we arrange certified Hindi or a regional language translation when your documents need it.
  5. Send it to India. We return the finished set to you, ready to submit.

India: What to Know Before You Order

  • India has accepted apostilles since 2005, so U.S. documents are apostilled rather than legalized through an Indian embassy.
  • Federal documents such as an FBI check are apostilled by the U.S. Department of State. State-issued documents are apostilled by the issuing state.
  • Many agencies want a recent issue date on background checks, so order the FBI check close to when you apply.
