What Is an Oregon Birth Certificate Apostille?
An apostille is a certificate attached to a public document that confirms the signature and authority of the official who issued it. Countries that belong to the Hague Apostille Convention accept an apostilled Oregon birth certificate without further legalization. For Oregon-issued documents, the apostille is issued by the Oregon Secretary of State, Corporation Division.
What Your Oregon Apostille Will Look Like
When your birth certificate is approved, the Oregon Secretary of State attaches a certificate like this one. It confirms the signature and capacity of the Oregon official who signed your document and carries the state seal and a unique number. Click the sample to enlarge.
Our Fee and Turnaround
Our Oregon apostille fee is $195. Typical turnaround is 3 to 5 business days, and next-day completion is sometimes possible.
What Your Birth Certificate Must Have
Oregon only apostilles original certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted.
- State-issued certificates must bear the signature of the Oregon State Registrar, obtained from the Oregon Center for Health Statistics (Vital Records).
- County-issued certified copies must be original and show the printed name and signature of the certifying official.
- The document must be issued by Oregon. Birth certificates from another state must be apostilled by that state.
Please note: We do not order documents from Vital Records. You will need to order your certified copy yourself from the Oregon Center for Health Statistics or your county before sending it to us.
How the Process Works
- Order your certified birth certificate from Oregon Vital Records or the issuing county.
- Contact PDX Fingerprinting and tell us the destination country so we can confirm an apostille is the right certification.
- Send us your original certified copy or bring it to our Portland office.
- We prepare and submit it to the Oregon Secretary of State with the required request form.
- We return your apostilled document, typically within 3 to 5 business days.
Which Countries Accept an Apostille?
An apostille is accepted by countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. If your destination country is not a member, the document may need embassy or consular legalization instead. Tell us where the document is going and we will confirm what is required.
Some countries also require a certified translation of the apostilled birth certificate. Translation is arranged separately, after the apostille is attached, so check the destination country requirements before ordering.
